Our Step-By-Step Process

1. Phone Consultation

We begin with a complimentary phone consultation to discuss your concerns regarding speech and language skills, and to determine the appropriate next steps. If an evaluation is recommended, it will be scheduled at this time. If you or your child were recently evaluated at another location (school, another clinic), you may be asked to share that evaluation to decide if any further testing is necessary.

2. Completion of Intake Forms

The information you provide through the initial intake forms plays an important role in the evaluation process. We ask that intake paperwork be completed prior to the evaluation to ensure the therapist maximizes the time with the client and can meet their unique needs. For pediatric clients: Please note that children have different developmental milestones for communication depending on their age, therefore, no detail is too small or insignificant when completing their developmental history.

3. Comprehensive Evaluation

A speech and language evaluation is typically 1 to 1.5 hours in length and consists of history review, formal standardized testing, clinical observation of current skills, oral motor examination, and informal observations. Once these assessments are complete, the therapist will analyze all the data to obtain a full picture, make a formal diagnosis, and prescribe recommendations for therapy, which will be documented in a report. Upon completion of the evaluation report, a client conference will be scheduled to review the findings and recommendations, and to answer any questions you may have.

4. Therapy

A treatment session is 30 minutes in length and typically occurs once per week (depending on the client’s need). Sessions are tailored to the client’s unique needs and goals identified during the evaluation. Pediatric therapy will look like play, and it is, but play with a purpose! The different strategies and techniques incorporated into our therapy session are always evidence-based to improve skills. As clients reach their goals, progress is monitored to update goals for continued growth.

5. Progress Check-Ins

As clients achieve their speech and language goals and improve their communication skills, our therapists will periodically offer a progress report. In addition, therapists will provide strategies and/or homework to help clients generalize their newly learned skills. Constant communication between caregiver/parent and therapists is very important, as caregivers are an integral part in the progress made at home from skills learned during therapy.

6. Collaboration

As speech therapists, part of our training is effective collaboration with any other medical or educational professionals involved in our client’s care. If needed, we are happy to work with other professionals to support the highest quality of care for our clients.

7. Discharge

Once a client has met all their goals or is no longer making progress, it will be necessary to discuss discharging from speech therapy services. When a client is discharged, they may be given a home program to help maintain the progress made at Spring Speech Therapy.
